Get ready to buy a new PS2

I think I just took it to a whole new level of broke. From increasingly freezing on cutscenes to the toothpaste related (or not) "disc read error" to some weird screen with a red cube floating down a red portal telling me to "please insert a Playstation of Playstation 2 format disc", which I've never seen or even heard of before.
Or maybe not. All I know is that you're going through what I saw shortly before my PS2 was somehow rendered incapable of reading anything at all. The full story as best as I can remember: - Had intermittent problems getting DVD and CD-ROM-game discs to read. No discernible pattern, but DVD-ROM games always worked. - Suddenly that switched around so that CD-ROM games would work as long as I angled the PS2 about 1/3rd of the way when sliding in the disc tray (never tried that before, I just tried either laying it flat or standing it up), but DVD-ROM games refused to load. - I cried. - Eventually it switches back so DVD-ROM games work. - I buy a shiny new copy of WWE Smackdown:Here Comes The Pain. - After many hours of fun play, the game crashes during a load screen after I hear some strange noises from the disc drive. - The disc now has a few circular marks on it. Not complete circles, maybe 2/3rds of the way around the disc, but there's at least five of them. - I try playing it. Disc Read Error. - I gave up after several more tries including tilting the machine a little, fully upright, upside down, etc. Nothing works. - I go back to Dynasty Warriors 3, or GTA:VC, or whatever. Disc Read Error. - I frantically try everything. Disc Read Error every time. Eventually, the same red screen you're talking about that utterly freaked my shit. - I hit the GameFAQs board for WWW Smackdown:HCTP. - I almost immediately notice the thread entitled "Game broke my PS2!" with about 500,000 replies. - I notice that all of us had Model 30001 PS2s, and all of us see little circular scratches on our disc. Many heard weird sounds just before the game crashed. It always crashed during the loading screen, never during a menu screen or actual match. HMM, LOOKS SUSPICIOUS. - I go out and make sure to buy a Model 50001. - Everything including Smackdown:HCTP runs fine, and the 50001 is just plain better so I don't even bother thinking about getting the 30001 repaired, I just trade it in for $50 credit. (The EB guy gave that to me even though I told him up-front that it wasn't reading anything at all.) Hopefully your PS2 isn't fucked beyond recovery, but I'm very wary of the 30001 models. The load times were so much worse, the fan noise was so much worse, basically it was just so much worse. Get a 50001 if you haven't already.
