Re: other thing I thought of

Bad memory is a common root cause for this failure. To avoid the risk of corrupting anew your recovered data, check it out with Memtest86, freely available as part of the awesome Ultimate Boot CD.
The GetDataBack software seems to be working. After examining the disk for 12 hours, it found practically everything. I'm copying the data over to another drive now and I don't anticipate any problems. So for the low low price of $79 I get to keep my job. The humiliation doesn't stem form my porn collection, which isn't among the data, but from the fact that it's important business data and this shit shoulda been backed up. Actually, I don't have a decent backup solution at the moment and I've been complaining about it for some time. (They've budgeted for it, supposedly. When I actually get it is anyone's guess.) And the official plan of putting it all on CDs is pretty stupid.* But it's still technically my fault that it never found its way to CDs or tape, so I'm sure I would have been the scapegoat for this. :( I have actually seen indications that my memory might be bad, or at least parts of it. I get occasional "the memory could not be 'read'" errors. So maybe that's the problem. The drive, as I said, seems to be in perfect working order otherwise. Anyway, thanks for the help. FYI, my brother tells me he's used disksavers in the past and that they're extremely good. So their incredibly gay website (Sean Connery's data was entrapped hur hur hur! Look at this broken laptop!) is just the result of faggot management and not a sign that they're all morons. *The full story behind this is much much longer and much much more boring. And extremely retarded, of course.
