good thing #2
Obscenely good character animation. Going from MGS3's excellent mocap work for everything and everyone to, say, Psi Ops's industry-standard half assed keyframing, I felt like I was being sucked back into some black hole of mediocrity and low expectations. It may be a ton of work but the by-hand approach simply is a squished gnat under the shoe of mocap when it comes to realistic character movement. Too bad the lip syncing was nonexistent. Also I appreciated how the game obviously had some sort of realistic physics model but then chose to essentially ignore it. I'm actually not being sarcastic; after the rope bridge at the beginning with the severable ropes, anything screaming "PHYSICS" was basically filed away, as if Kojima was trying to say, "yes I could do a bunch of gaywad physics crap, but from now on I am going to utterly avoid it in blatant violation of what everyone seems to think about the mandatory inclusion of random tumbling boxes." Same thing with the ragdolls, which obviously work but we are spared seeing everyone cartwheel through the air in a gruesome display of tech licensing.
