Caltrops - Gamerasutra

I'm not sure I even have any jokes or invectives or even adjectives that can describe how much this sucks. I got into the beta and I dutifully play it a few hours a night and file the bug reports etc. etc., I'm a good tester I guess, but there is absolutely nothing to this game. It doesn't even have the framework to become something interesting in the future. I'm setting the typical beta bugs aside here: I expect things to randomly teleport out of my inventory, and given The Elder Warchowski's taste in S&M, I actually expected my clothes to disappear periodically during combat. It's the game itself, or more specifically, the game City of Heroes whipping out it's caped super-cock and pissing all over it. here's where theyr'e alike: you run around and punch stuff. Here's where they're different: CoH is a fucking blast, this game is terrible. They're pretty close to the movies, in that you move with the same kind of combat moves as the characters int he film do, you can do the blurry bullet dodging stuff and the shoot-guys-while-doing-cartwheels, but it doesn't really look all that good. In fact, it looks kind of like the original DAOC but with the colors washed out a bit. The beta state of the game also mandates setting aside lack of content, but there isn't anything here to support content anyway. Some tiny jpg thumbnail gives you missions and you do them in the same little two room apartment over and over again, when the elevator lets you get there. Basically you shoot people with an uzi until they get close enough to kick them in the head, but the hand-to-hand is kind of like Rock-Paper-Scissors, you queue up one of four moves and the game rolls some dice. Slowly. There are no NPCs that are not stores. There are no pedestrians or moving traffic. The agents are your friends, for the most part, you spend all your time fighting npcs who awakened but for some reason like to hang out with the Merovingian. The battles are not difficult once you realize what button to click to attack, but there's an exp cap on what you can get for killing things, and it is set so low that it's more economical to kill the easiest enemies by the handful than the tougher ones one at a time. The only thing I really like about this game is the money, since it's so easy to get. You don't have enough? Run around the block killing stuff and you'll be able to afford whatever you want. You can make about 1000K a minute, and the average skill you train runs about 5K. I'm sure there are idiots complaining that it's too easy, but I'm experiencing a lot more of this game as a result of being able to advance quickly, which gives me more time to test things. This game, overall, is just bad. It sucks. There's not enough to it to judge it on its crappy interface or complete inability to support plot or draw the player in. There's no joy in the game, no fun to the combat, and the endless drab wasteland of a town is not really anything to look at. I can't believe they thought they would release this in June, or in July, or in November, or in this coming January. Their best bet is to shut it down, reassign the developers, and hope someone else comes along with a better plan. /jeep/
Some COMPLETE FAGGOT I know got accepted to the Dawn of War beta, but instead of taking advantage of this to play a fun RTS and even have a hand in the development process, he shelved it so he could play the matrix online beta instead. "While you're busy shooting orcs, I'll be karate chopping security guards!" was an exact quote, because we all know how fun that is.
