For what you're looking for the SC1 is probably a good buy. I'd be sure to drive one first to get an idea of exactly how unbelieveably slow they are though. Consumer Guide has good reviews written by very boring people, and is a great way to check model differences between cars quickly. In this case, the SC1 was redesigned in '97 for a little more interior room. I'd recommend an SC2 with a manual if you want to merge with highway traffic, ever.
At this point, having asked a few more people on IM, etc. - as far as I'm concerned the '98 SC1, of which there happens to be a great example right nearby colored red with all the good options , 73,000 miles and an exceptionally low price because of the mileage, is the winner. Was a three-way tie with the Paseo and Tercel but features (especially polymer body) and looks broke that tie. Judging from this consumer reports page (the '97-'02 section of the SC), 98 is in fact the best possible year. Why? Of the six common problems associated with the design, the automatic-transmission '98 features only three of the six (window rattling, some transmission cases may be leaky [gotta check this, that's not good], and the AC needing the occasional break during highway driving) common problems. The '98 is also the only year with 0 NHTSA recall history outside of '02, so overall the '98 automatic transmission SC1, one of which is in stock at a dealership right near here, looks good. We won't find out whether we're buying a car or not at all to begin with for a few more days. It'll all become clear then and it affects the forums so I'll explain at that time. Fortunately, assuming nobody snaps up this car in the next 3-4 days and our 95% likelihood of needing it comes through AND it's in good condition, we're golden. Price is just gorgeous all things considered. Also, Consumer Reports told me what I needed to know about reliability when it said the car was less refined in features than the Japanese competitors (Civic, Tercel/Paseo) but boasts an impressive reliability record. That's all I needed to hear, I'm sold, thanks and goodnight. Fingers crossed for the rest of the week, --SB
