Re: No need to bother

3. I'm not overly worried about the cpu usage since its only used when quoting chat logs
Except when BadGuy Hacker specifically targets it. I assumed he meant non-accidental 'mistakes'. Explain something to a non-programmer: Whatever code you use to convert it into chat-log format would run independent of the forum code, right ..? Meaning, just because you check for post size doesn't mean that he shouldn't too since his converter doesn't have to play by your rules until it eventually tries to spit something out.
No, actually, it wouldn't. I'm going to have a little function where I go colorifyAIM($text) and it spits out happy fun colors, where $text is the stuff inbetween [aim] tags, or [log format="aim"] tags. If I'm feeling <i>particularly saucy, I might even object orientalize it</i>.
Or would the call to the converter be setup to only hand off 'X' number of characters in the first place ..? Did that make sense ..?
Made sense; the assumptions you based it off of were just wrong. The PHP module that runs in Apache has a max post (in http terms, not forum) size of a few megs. Furthurmore, within the pointy forum code, I have a max post size of approx. a couple hudred k. If somebody is hitting that upper limit, they're most likely spamming anyhow, so they'll just get deleted. Another thing is, the code isn't doing anything terribly complicated, so it's running pretty fast already. The calcode.exe is instantaneous for me, and it has to deal with the additional overhead of starting a new process, uncompressing itself, and generating a few temp files. -/ES/-
