Re: Interesting Link: Group dynamics in online communities

I disagree with your assumption that the OMM forums weren't moderated. I might accept that they were not moderated heavily by the actual folks with the official title to do so, but as anyone who didn't have their head completely up their ass will testify, the group certainly policed itself quite well. One could certainly make a case that the mob was overambitious with its self-policing duties at times.
I'm more operating under Shirky's definition of moderator - his thesis is that the software (or forum code, in our case) should make an explicit distinction between the BDR's and the FoKs, so that the newbies don't get too far out of line. My point (and yours, too! C'mere you - *gives a noogie*), which I didn't state clearly enough, is that there's implicit moderation in groups that don't have those systems in written into place. Interesting, too, that the real fagtards don't seem to stick around here for long, whereas POE can't seem to get rid of them despite Hands Across America-scaled efforts to get them to leave. Though, that could be because all of our fagtards are just forum regulars in furry disguises.
You do realize that Clay Shirky is Hokie Mokie from the old forums, right?
No Dude, we did *not* realize that. Personally, I'm still waiting to see if the party will pick up later. I heard someone's bringing a fifth of the Captain.
Too late, already drank it. Sorry! FoK
