Re: interesting thread from one of the Fallout designers on SA

I think I could not care less about the hand to hand skills, or for that matter, the melee skills. I like Fallout for the guns, and if they can come up with other ranged variations (mutant psionics, etc), I would like it even better. Hell, the only time I ever used hth was when required or when I messed around with the editor and found it amusing to knock some powerarmor clad faggot across the screen. The ideas for AI sound interesting, but I am still not very fond of having NPC's that one does not control completely. One thing is occasionally having to deal with a fuckup when a character gets "confused" or whatever in FF; something else entirely is making me get rid of characters altogether because I simply cannot stand having them as anything other than ammo carriers if they are not going to behave themselves, as happened in Fallout 1+2 (yay tactics). I REALLY like the ideas about broadening the skills, particularly the ability to make your own items in relation to your abilities, as Arcanum promised but never really delivered. If they can figure out a way to make it interestingly openended, I foresee A LOT of replayability. I can only hope that they improve the graphics without going fruity and non-functional, and that they do not carry over all the combat options from Fallout Tactics, as most were not really all that interesting. Although I did like the multilevel stuff, and the ducking. I forget what the ones I didn't like where, but I remember the battles being unecessarily complex.
Well considering one of their design goals seems to be limiting ammo and making the world a bit more Mad Max, melee and hand-to-hand might have to become more important. It was easy to not care about the other combat skills because they were worthless in comparison.
I don't like the combining all the gun skills into one. Small/Big makes a good division without the why-is-this-different-to-use? energy category. I could give a shit about hth combos - what I want is the disarm/knock over/stealth necksnap capability. What I ESPECIALLY want is a disarm kick you can do when your hands are full. Why the hell can't I kick with my left leg while my left hand is otherwise occupied? I also want MOTHERFUCKING guns akimbo and the JA2 burst fire system. What I envision is sneaking along a wall to a corner, waiting for the enemy to walk past it on its patrol, then jumping out, kicking the gun out of his hand, and unloading a round of .44 magnum into each eye socket. Then I steal his pants, sneak into camp, and RAPE their WOMEN, gaining a "Serial Rapist" karma attribute as a result. I'm also in favor of a head/torso/arms/legs armor division that would encourage aiming at weak points. -/ES/-
