(It's kind of like my eternal love and admiration for Allegiance. It had a lot of problems, but the core idea was so goddamned compelling that I was willing to excuse each and every flaw.)
One Word: rfblasco Tresspasser
That comparison should not, and must not, ever be made. Allegiance needed tweaking of ships, more variance from side to side, more permanence for pilots, stabler servers, and a better system for choosing (and booting) commanders. It also needed much better marketing. I say "a lot" because there were a ton of *small* problems. Trespasser, OTOH, couldn't have been made good, interesting, and playable by the combined brains behind Quest for Glory, Manhunter: New York, and Star Control 2. (A combination which, now that I stop and think about it, needs to happen. What the hell else are they working on right now, anyway? It's not like the "Ancient Art of War" series is going strong.)
