He kicked the shit out of every last one of us -- constantly -- but I never got the sense that it was anything personal. I don't think Joe even noticed. I hated his team, I hated seeing my team get pasted by him, but I couldn't dislike him. Of course, I doubt I could have truly disliked anyone who got on Saturday Night Live and used the word "masturbate" in a sketch at the particular time and year he did. So there's that. (This is different than how N.O. fans view Steve Young: we never liked him, we always thought he was a smarmy, smug little punk and when Chris Hewitt decked him in that hat-on-hat collision, well, we weren't exactly cheering, but not exactly broken up about it either. When Montana got clobbered in the AFC Championship game by Buffalo when he was a Chief I honestly cringed and felt bad for him and was hoping that he was going to make it out okay.) Brooks already has ice water in his veins, and there's nobody currently in the NFL that I'd rather have running a two-minute drill down six at the end of a game. I hope, if nothing else, Montana can get it through his head that he does need to carry himself with more fire and intensity during the other 58 minutes. With all the guys Haslett's run out of town, this really is Aaron Brooks's team. If Montana can do all that and offer the kid some advice on how to him out of that K-Swiss contract then he'll be worth every cent it costs to bring him in for a week. the dark and gritty...Ice Cream Jonsey!
