I missed it. MUST NOT HAVE MEMORIZED IT.

... is that D&D-style "memorization" isn't really reading the spell and remembering how it goes so you can cast it, it's a meditative/magical process under which you transfer the power of the runes in your spellbook onto yourself. So, spellcasting is sort of a two-part process - first you cast the spell that gives you capability to perform the 2nd part, wherein you shoot pretty flowers from your fingertips or whatever.
Yeah, but they still call it "memorizing," don't they? That's my point: there's an arm's length of falderall associated with D&D magicka (DINGDINGDING GAYNESS WOOPWOOP FAGCON 5) , reagents and power transference and canting and whatfuckingall, but there it goes: "BUHHHH, I have no Fireball memorized!" Maybe that's the fault of the fast 'n' loose computer interpretations of the D&D rules, but it came from somewhere. Look, it's not that I'm disagreeing with you so much. But still, exact quantifiable bits of energy owing to a certain specific spell and only that spell, for any discrete amount is pretty gay. As mentioned, the 3rd Ed. rules try to ungay it somewhat with the Sorceror's rules for magic use.
It's a solution to the PnP version of button-mashing, which would let 3rd level spellcasters cast Fireball every time, and subtract variety from the game. "Mana" points would alleviate the button-mashing issue, but wouldn't alleviate the variety issue. It's supposed to foster creativity, I think.
My point ezactly. I wouldn't mind seeing Constitution incorporated somehow. It would dispel the archetype of the wimpy mage, but it would make a hell of a lot more sense, testing one's internal fortitude against the physically taxing process of casting magic. A smort mage with the will of a (insert tuff animal here, they all sound cliche and gay in my head) would/should be the ideal. Fuck, even Wisdom ought to have a hand. Magic shouldn't be easy, it seems all these stupid shortcuts we're arguing over are all in lieu of that. BDR
