So, Amplitude is a game that people, like, buy and own? I sort of assumed it was something their student friends put together.
Enh, why not? Amplitude and Frequency are both great little party games. BUT... I bought them at used prices ($30 and $10 respectively), mainly because there's no damn way I'd pay $50 for either one. They don't have long-lasting appeal to me as single-player games (you could just buy some decent electronica/rock/rap albums and play them on Media Player while using a trippy plug-in and enjoy the end result every bit as much), and I do as much solo gaming as multiplayer so that's a big factor for me. I bought both because, while Amplitude's multiplayer is noticably better than Frequency's, Frequency's mroe rave-centric soundtrack appealed much more to the BLEEP BEEP BOOP BLOOP electronica fag in me. I'd agree with Fussbett about both games being inferior to Beatmania except that A: I've not played Beatmania and can't imagine how it'd improve upon the simple-yet-fun gameplay of Freq/Amp and B: a casual glance at GameFAQs' song listings for the Beatmania games tells me that both Freq and Amp's soundtracks are about infinity times better. Even IF Amplitude has (in my correct opinion) insufferable crap like Blink-182 in it.
I've played Beatmania. It doesn't. The process of laying down tracks and building a song in both games easily eclipses Beatmania, where you only play one role. Beatmania has two more keys, the necessity of hitting multiple keys at once, lame "keyboard on the left" controller design, and an embarassingly cheap "turntable". That's it. I could see Fussbett going on about how some of the other "instrument" games are better (Guitar Freaks is ingeniously designed and Percussion Freaks is a punishing trial of pain and horror), but Beatmania has long since been eclipsed. Hell, the remix mode alone makes the Harmonix games superior.
The first thing I said upon checking out Beatmania's song list: NO CRYSTAL METHOD.
Some would call this a good thing.
My brain couldn't believe what my eyes were telling it: NO FEAR FACTORY.
As someone who's finished Frequency, may I just say MOTHERFUCKING FEAR FACTORY OFF BEAT GUITAR TRACKS. FreQout was easier than that. No Percussion Freaks, sure, but it seemed like they just distributed the notes randomly.
As if all that wasn't enough, although it clearly is: NO FREEZEPOP. I believe I tossed in a "FUCKING" for emphasis.
Get them out of my head. Please. Help.
On top of all of that, sort of the Guilty Gear X2 instant-KO attack of musical ommissions that all by itself would have me unfairly dismissing Beatmania without having played it: NO RUN-MOTHERFUCKING-DMC.
To be fair, 99.9% of games, including Frequency, have omitted Run-DMC from their soundtracks. Although it doesn't invalidate the point, just makes it sadder.
Basically, Beatmania = LOSE LOSE LOSE LOSE and EXTRA-LOSE. Although I'll grudgingly admit that Fussbett's usually right about this sort of thing, so perhaps I'll rent it.
Don't bother. It's pointless without the specialized controller. Oh, and by the way, if Fussbett is going to advocate Japanese music games, then may I be the first to say FUCK BEATMANIA AND BEMANI GAMES, SAMBA DE AMIGO 2000 MOTHERBITCHES. HUSTLE, HUSTLE, HUSTLE, POSE!
