I take my 25th level mage (PnP or in, say, <I>Throne of Bhaal</I>) into some dungeon <I>du jour</I>. Let's say it's sufficiently small to take in one go, no resting required. What, I'm going to Time Stop the door guards? Save the Magic Missiles for the Tanar'ri at the top of the tower? Seems to me the very time sequence of a high-level mage entering a dungeon/tower/mystical locker room would be using the lower-level stuff on the small potatoes in the periphery, and saving (purposely, even) Ze Big Guns on whatever screaming horrors await further in. As far as mana vs memory goes: they're both stupid. Memorization <I>per se</I> is probably dumber, but as somebody (sorry, forgot who) said, it was an evolution/simplification from the old D&D rules, which mentioned carrying a pinch of sulphur mixed with what-all else for a fireball, for instance. You had physical components involved, a bit of alchemy thrown in. What that has to do with memorizing a spell more than once in quantifiable discrete amounts is still beyond me, however. Likewise, if I wanted to cast spell that required 25 mana and all I had was 24; well, that's pretty fucking stupid too. RPG rules systems are mostly like that. Personally, I think the most realistic method would be the Use It Or Lose It model, where the more fireballs you cast, the more you get to in time, per day. But <I>Daggerfall</I> (and others) proved how to fuck that model all up, casting a spell <I>ad infinitum</I> against a wall to improve its capability.
