Re: 3rd edition rules?

In case of D&D it's all about numbers going up. Fuck any hippie game that doesn't tell me wich gauntlet is better, that's like playing without stats at all. And if you do that you could just do random things, whatever you do you'd have no idea how successfull you are until after you try it (the quickload dilemma).
I guess maybe I have a naively optimistic idea of the possibilities for fantasy games and RPGs. The thing that bugged me most about the PnP rpgs was that it's basically a bunch of sweaty fags sitting around and min/maxing at each other. Here's a faggily romanticized example: fighter character is given a sword by his dying father, the sword is named Orcslayer or some shit. Fighter uses the sword to avenge his father's death, lots of high action and drama is occurring, the main villain thing is here, and the fighter defeats him with his trusty (and sentimental!) blade Orcslayer. Cue the strings and brass! Then he notices that his companion has fallen in combat. "Oh no! Oh, wait... Sweet! His sword of sharpness is +3! Mine is only +2!" Orcslayer is sold at the weapon shop near the save-game point. Perhaps then my problem is with D&D in general, or at least the prevailing attitude of people that play it. I think the games should be about the story, the action, and sex with elves. Not about raising your hit points and lowering your armor class. I would be happier without those things. FoK
