As the "inside" of that inside joke is padlocked deep within a magical kingdom we cannot peer into, it's impossible to know how it started, but I guess you could assume that a squid, named Admiral Ackbar, screaming "IT'S A TRAP!" while his fleet is getting blown up is funny.
