Re: Age of Wonders

You can bring whatever your heart desires into combat, as long as you make them, group them, and send them into a fight. The level of control you exert over the composition of a group, and which skirmishes they engage in, is virtually identical to the mechanics of Civilization, except for the much more detailed combat. You can put up to 8 units on a single stack, and 6 or 7 different stacks total can enter into the same combat. There also aren't (thankfully) any gay rules about how many points you can put in a stack, or unit size - you can put 8 of the highest level units together, if you can get them.
You do the actual fighting like in X-COM / JA2 though, right? For instance, if you throw a bunch of units together, I am presuming that the screen switches to a closer view and you then move your little guys around the screen clobbering your enemies that way. I can't tell you how badly I want the answer to this question to be "yes."
No. The tactical fighting isn't as deep. But yes it's there, and you can win diffcult fights by playing smart. But it's not the focus of the game so it kinda gets old imho.
