Re: Turn based tactical combat that doesn't suck?

[Lots of stuff that I honestly didn't read too closely]
The only wargame that's ever been able to hold my attention for long has been Steel Panthers: World at War, and as luck would have it, it hits on many of your points. It's basically a (free!) remake of the first Steel Panthers game, only in Windows and with prettier graphics. As far as my non-wargaming ass can tell, it's fucking amazing. What impresses me most is A: how each unit type needs to work together in order to win battles and B: how much of an emphasis is on stealth (note that I have no idea if this is de rigeur in wargames). Though be warned: the AI is pretty retarded, it's easy (even I can come out on top on most scenarios), and I have no idea how campaigns or large battles play out. I just use the randomly-generated single battles on medium-sized maps.
