What are you talking about?
I know how in vogue it is to tout Squaresoft as the Eisner of RPG's and I'll even agree to a certain extent, but what console alternatives are there? Atlus stumbled into Disagaea, which I maintain as the only game they've ever released not to cause blood to hemorrhage from my eyes. Enix? Stop the craven fanboyism. Dragon Warrior VII was bar none the ugliest fucking morphidite RPG ever to stumble onto the Playstation. Where as Final Fantasy VII had super-deformed dwarfs, Dragon Warrior VII was a marvel of single block .gifs marching in place. The battle system managed to lower the bar further with a first person vantage point and a wild array five enemies recycled a hundred times over in two tone palette swaps, the screen going schizophrenic to save from having to animate an actual attack. Think Wizardy I or, ahem, the original Dragon Warrior. The plot itself was of course the only one Enix knows, which involves a specious affair of "finding" pieces of the continent that have disapeared (Soulblazer, Illusion of Gaea, Terranigma...etc). When it comes to static, number crunching battles I'll take Square's eye candy over this Wizard 1 bullshit.
Negative! They did away with the traditional overworld map and went with FFX's "running down a linear road" model. Further signs of Square's evil influence.
And Dragon Warrior VII wasn't linear for the first 50 hours?
Positive! No random encounters. You can see monsters on the overhead map and they are easily avoided. Retreating from combat is also very easy. You only fight when you want to.
Okay, this I'll toss back at Enix when they did The 7th Saga and it is about fucking time its seen a return.
