Re: It was a 10 year, only

Laphroaig is actually on of my favorite Whiskeys. Smoky and warm. Great stuff. It's for Scotch drinkers though. If you haven't developed a taste for it (and it sounds like you never will), I can imagine how the peat-moss flavor would kill you. If you want to develope a taste, hollow out a few bottles of VAT 69. When the fist sip of a fresh pint makes you smile, it's time to start exploring the good stuff.
No 12+s around - I should have gone with the Glenmorangie 12 sitting right next to it. I think its mainly the fucking salt/seaweed nastiness - there's something about it beyond mere alchohol which makes me ill. Now, I actually love Bowmore 12, though it stilll causes me distress to a lesser degree. Sad. I've really got to try a highlands malt before I discount Scotch completely - Islays are dead to me. -/ES/-
Haven't you ever tried Balvenie? It is like a smoldering fire that tastes nice, then permeates the walls of your your esophagus before it ever hits your stomach and makes you feel like a sea anemone that is full of tingly goodness. Moderately priced in my area. The double wood 12 is great.
