SNES vs. PS2

Oh, and one other thing (just as a response to one sub-subthread. Anybody who thinks that there were only a handful of good games on the SNES (or Genesis, for that matter) either never had the system, or never looked past the magazine ads. The "Glory days of the PSX" featured rather a lot of platformers and boring RPGs too, except with added shitty cameras looking on blurry, warped textures. Oh, and largely empty boards too, thanks to the weak power of the PSX.
I think that was me. Maybe the fact that I had to pay SEVENTY to EIGHTY dollars per cartridge kept me from trying every SNES game that came down the line, and even out of free ROM's, the only ones that really hold my interest are the same ones I enjoyed back then (2 player Metal Warriors = teh bomb). And I stopped suscribing to Nintendo Power back in 1990 thank you very much. I was talking about the PS2, the PSX can kiss my ass. After the year long drought of shitty launch titles ended, I've been enjoying far more PS2 titles than anything SNES.
FABIO, they were platformers and shooters and such... why the hell didn't you rent? (ROMs don't count, you can't judge a game from 10 years ago by today's standards, but it's extremely hard not to do when the comparison is there). I didn't buy games either back then (outside of maybe a few a year), but it never stopped me. As for enjoying far more PS2 titles than anything SNES... without numbers, there's not much to say to that. The SNES was definitely better for RPGs (at least right now, the PS2 is becoming an RPG powerhouse, although back in the SNES days there was still some novelty to the whole thing), better for platformers (nothing today comes close to the high-level SNES platformers, especially the Nintendo stuff, as most 3D platformers suck), and better for overall polished gameplay (by the end of the 16 bit era, 2D gameplay was polished to a fine sheen). I'd add in the Genesis simply because the system featured the best digital controller ever divised and some of the best examples of pretty much any genre you can name, but we were talking about single systems here. Oh, and it also featured the best examples of a forgotten, and deeply missed genre: Action-RPGs. Nothing on the PS2 blew me away like Terranigma, Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3, Soulblazer, or Link to the Past. Not even close. Then again, the SNES and PS2 are fairly similar types of systems... ones that aren't so much a difference in type as a refinement of concepts. The SNES took primitive 2D gameplay and graphics from the SNES era and refined it as much as could be done. (Even stellar 2D games from the PSX era like Symphony of the Night are just repetitions of 16-bit era gameplay). The PS2 is taking primitive 3D gameplay and graphics from the PSX era and refining it- cameras are better (although still mostly suck), immersiveness is better, the variety of experiences is wider, etc. So then again, the comparison is probably moot, coming down to the battle between 2D and 3D. That's somewhat too subjective to decide.
