Reports like that kept me from MGS2. Get Splinter Cell.
I've only got the PC version, but it easily holds up to NOLF2 and Max Payne. You won't forgive the units with less AI than their own bullets - which rarely miss - or the short playlength, or the lack of replayability; but everything else is fantastic. The lighting is impressive, the shootouts are well staged, and each mission has several holy shit moments. And don't listen to any of this 'too linear' crap that's been fed through the airwaves. Half Life was linear, Max Payne was linear, and Splinter Cell makes up for its own shortcomings with your ability to do some totally new shit in each level. The night and thermal visions are pretty useful, but the ability to take NPCs hostage and interrogate them mid-choke never gets old. The PS2 version has an extra level, I think. And it fags up your (originally) badass character during the intro sequence.
