Re: More money, but less blowing shit up.
No. Go look at pictures of destroyed tanks in Iraq. The one thing you'll notice is that the hulls are almost always realtively intact. Propellant and diesel fuel don't blow up like that. Break open a a bullet and light the gunpowder on fire. It won't explode, just flare up pretty good. Also, try to light a bucket of diesel fuel on fire. What would actually happen is you would see one explosion on the outside of the tank (the shaped charge going off). Then, a few seconds later flames would start coming out of the hatches and possibly from the turret ring as the propellant started to flare up. It will burn for hours and have a bunch of small explosions from the inside as the ammo cooks off. That looked more like it got hit by a 1,000 pound bomb. The hull is absolutely gone.
To address another point made later, Javelin is fire and forget. In the real world, you probably wouldn't just stand around and watch it fly, unless your opponents are Iraqis and you can you pretty much idle your ass at will. Note that the motor is essentially smokeless, so it's not like a guy in the tank would see jack shit. Also, there's not much backblast, so Javelin can be fired out of windows, from under overhangs, etc.
I'm not saying it's not a good weapon. It's great from everything I've heard. Actually, anything that gets rid of the Dragon is good idea. Just that one good anti-tank weapon does not put the tank of of business. People have been saying the age of the tank is over ever since they discovered the Monroe Effect.
Is this clip of Phalanx shooting down a cruise missile better? Picky bitches :|.
:) (complete with totally rockin soundtrack)
