Re: Mom, Dad, I hate it when you fight!
Following FOK’s lead, here are my thoughts, such as I can give them from a position of obviously unassailable neutrality and superior detachment. I’ll summarily pass over the issues so that whoever’s accounting your consensus group hand waving can include my votes when objectively deciding who wins. Without much context other than his conduct here, from what I've seen SB doesn’t seem to be the Fincher protagonist he’s made out to be. That said, the heavy-handed reaction to the spammer was stupid and cowardly. The appeal to the forums about it afterwards was even worse. But neither of those things seem to indicate that SB is anything other than jumpy, and ES severe, and after having the piss taken out of both of them for their respective flaws, I’m guessing they’ll act less administrative in the future. What’s the problem? Someone fucks up and you attack them for it. Seems to be as functional a peer control mechanism as any. Obscure forum names are not a problem; why placate the obtuse? FAQs, workable email, disclaimers, submission processes, and so on are all good ideas. Clamor enough and surely the admins will get on it. Also, the work that SB and ES have put into the site should qualify them for a little bit more bitch-leeway than non-participants. Ostensibly, they care more than you. Still, it seems fair to troll SB and V as much as possible. It’s apparently quite productive of heated exchange; I only wish you all were a little funnier when you called each other out. (kudos to the SB site; good play, good play) In fact, now that I think about it, the choice attacks and wordplay, the quality rhetoric and meta-games and sneaky turns of phrase need to get more recognition from their targets than a presumptuously expressive one-liner or repetitious restatement of some or another character cliché. Is the idea that fine wit can be undermined by snide self-reference, or that its legitimacy is destroyed by a refusal to meet it on its own ground? If you’re performing for some imagined audience, Vag’s brother beats you almost every time (SB got in a few good ones, too). Anyway, this is incidental to everything else. I like the metafag concept, but surely dismissal is an admission of defeat? Speaking of which, the FGiTM articles were quite good. Clifford Geertz commentary and a knowing sending-up of slash fanatics was fun. I was waiting for the time when Vag would live up to her pronouncements of manipulation and mind-fucking, though. I wanted nasty and cunning. Infiltration alone wasn’t clever or devious. Complicity alone wasn’t satire. Still, it sucks that they’re gone, and that Vag lost her sense of humor (or else developed it beyond everyone else’s radar – probably not). Yet, if she won’t come clean, I think you should put them back up to spite her. That, or find the girls. Make her defend herself. Call her out on her hidden perspective. I thought that you fuckers were about pushing boundaries and comfort zones and whatnot. Vag banning herself was more than a little strange. There has to be more behind it; I’d like to know what. It’s an Agatha Christie novel written by Rumiko Takahashi. BD might just be the voice of reason, but only if he’s taking all of this less seriously than the rest of you. Creexul is just causing chaos. He’s partly upset, but more than anything likes watching everyone else burn. INC is still obnoxious. Or Chet. Is there a way to turn all of this into an article? ES? DC? Finally, you all are a fucking circus. Come what may, I’m completely entertained.
