Macs and Music
Macs are fantastic unless you play games or want to use sound software other than protools. Cool Edit is indeed the greatest sound editing app of all time, and nothing can ever replace it. On the mac: maybe I just haven't found tools I like yet (I did spend a lot of time finding tools I liked on the pc for editing, tracking, etc), or maybe the tools don't exist (this is my guess). I've been thinking about writing some sound apps in desperation, but this requires time I won't have for a long while. A few of my electronic music friends went mac, but from my understanding all they do is run their hardware in and edit in protools (although one of them has a hideously expensive Korg and it came with its own software...) instead of creating new music on the machine, which is what I prefer. When I started computer-composing music in highschool, I used Macs with Midi Keyboards I really liked it. However, I can't remember what software I used and it probably doesn't exist anymore. Do you have any idea what your profs/boss are using? Since you use real instruments in the real world, you probably would have less trouble moving over than I have. Still, you would have to unlearn what you know which is much more painful than the learning a new system. Oh, and you can't use your dream pre-amp. mark
