Re: I think it was pretty obvious what I was saying, dumbass

Morrowind was NOT on rails was my point. Like GTA3, like Privateer, like Op Flashpoint, Morrowind was the CURE for this bullshit games-as-interactive-books fuckshittery plaguing the industry. I swear to God modern FPS games have more in common with ye olde adventure games than anybody is comfortable admitting.
And the thing is, I would happily play games that were linear if the stories were better. Most of the time they suck. I have no idea if that's the publisher essentially telling the designer to stick to the tried and true or if it is because there really isn't a lot of literary talent in the industry. But even games that are good would benefit from the sandbox approach: if Freedom Force had a stretch where you could take your team out into squads and patrol the city (or even react to randomly generated missions a la X-COM) I'd be willing to pronounce it one of the greatest games of all time. I had no idea that Flashpoint was in this group. I was totally under the impression that it was a straight-ahead shooter. Time to go grab it. What other games am I missing? I've got all the Ultimas, Sim Cities, GTAs & X-COMs as well as Daggerfall, some version of Elite, and memories of Black & White that existed IN MY MIND when I saw it at E3. I know I'm forgetting a few old ones, but I can't easily recall anything else that fits this mold that's been released in the last year. This is information I need. the dark and gritty...Ice Cream Jonsey!
