MK 5 or MK: Deadly Alliance is actually a huge improvement in the series and has revitalized the franchise for a whole new generation.
Well anything would be a step up from 3 and 4....and 1. All the 3 fighting styles seem to do is make you memorize 3 times the combos, and you DO need to memorize the combos. That's all the game really is, another "unleash the pre-programmed combos" fighter. All fighting games these days seem to just be toned down versions of Killer Instinct. Fatalities = lame. Honestly, simple decapitations just don't cut it anymore, and each character only gets ONE, compared to the, what, FIVE each character got in the second? They actually are easier to pull off since it doesn't matter how far away you're standing. Each character only gets about 2-3 special moves, most of which are useless. Each character has a generic "fireball" ranged attack that's no good what so ever due to the slow paced of the game coupled with the six different ways to dodge things assures you that they'll never hit, not that they'd do much damage even if they did. Also, whatever happened to the time honored tradition of making the last boss HARD? The last 2 MK games have featured regular playable characters for the last boss that are no harder than any of the other fights. Bring back Shao Kahn. And guys, just give up on trying to give MK any sort of plotline. It's been pretty obviously pulled out of someone's ass for the past three games now. Just have your generic "fighters wish to prove themselves in a tournament" every other game uses.
