Re: Trump said Putin was smart and that the invasion was a tragedy

None of this changes the fact that Biden had an option as to how to respond. And he folded. He announced ahead of time that he wouldn't send any troops. Just like how he announced ahead of time that he would pull all troops out of Afghanistan at a certain date no matter what. Turns out, pre-announcing your plans to your enemies allows them to counter your plans. It is literally like showing the rest of the table your poker hand.
I think you underestimate how long it takes to "send troops." In order to have enough men and materiel in Ukraine to provide a credible deterrent at the time Russia was ready to invade, the US would've had to commit to full-scale war a few months ago. The US could've still deployed their rapid response forces in January or February, some airborne light infantry with extremely limited anti-armor and anti-air capability, but what happens when Russia rolls over them? Nukes? The US could use nukes right now, without even having to lose a few hundred guys. The US would be in a better position to provide conventional air support for the Ukrainians if they hadn't handed over their bases in Syria to the Russians a couple years ago, but who could've foreseen something like this happening? Certainly not whoever was president at the time.
