Also, spending 4 years demonizing Putin as responsible for everything bad in American politics, kind of made him feel like he had nothing left to lose in terms of relations with the US. Even during the cold war, we didn't do that, and communism was a much more prolific ideology than Russian nationalism. Nobody is lining up to fight for Russia except Russians. Turns out, ethnic nationalism isn't that attractive unless you are of the same ethnicity.
