The Witcher (Netflix)
I enjoyed it, but I totally understand how critics and other people with no background in the video games would hate it because the movie lacks any establishing exposition. Not what Witchers are, not the conjunction of the spheres, not the existing relationship between the northern kingdoms and Nilfgard, nothing. Even worse, it's constantly jumping between three different timelines and doesn't tell you that's what's happening. So strange, even the game Witcher 3 started out with a short piece of expository dialogue, but if you come to the Netflix show a Witcher virgin, you're going to be impossibly lost. There's even a part where someone tells Geralt to use Aard and at no point has any mention been made of Witchers' ability to use basic spells and that Aard is the telekinetic push one. That said, Henry Cavill is great as Geralt. All the standoffish personality traits that made his Superman so creepy are perfect for the Witcher. But then, I played the game and I know he's going to end up best friends with Dandelion the Bard, so what I interpreted as Geralt putting up a front of annoyance could to the uninitiated look like genuine irritation. Although as a fan of the game I'm a little confused by some of the changes. Foltest was cast as a fat slob, and the actress playing Triss Merigold looks nothing like her videogame counterpart. As for the show itself, despite having three timelines that finally converge in the finale, it's very episodic and the Geralt portion of each show is a self-contained story so you don't need to feel obligated to binge like other streaming shows. It's enjoyable mild entertainment if you like the games, but by no means a can't-miss event show. I like it and look forward to season 2.
