Holy shit you have no idea how backward you have it RE: Bolsonaro, Brazil, & USA
Suggested weekend viewing (if you want to be completely and utterly depressed): TL;DR: Lula Da Silva, hugely successful former Brazillian president, was leading by double digits against neofascist Jair Bolsonaro in the 2018 Brazillian presidential election. Lula was targeted by the US-backed Lava Jato corruption task force personally (which has since been disgraced for uncovered corruption itself) and convicted by Judge Sergio Moro on incredibly flimsy charges. Lula was arrested and imprisoned with less than two months to go in the election, his successor had no time to set up a campaign, and Bolsonaro became Brazillian president pretty much by default. Bolsonaro rewarded Judge Sergio Moro by making him Justice Minister. I don't think it's hyperbole to call this a coup. The story has only become even more disgusting since the documentary came out. TL;DR: Judge Sergio Moro was coordinating with prosecutors directly on piecing together a plausible enough case to imprison Lula before the election. In case you're wondering, this is why the progressive caucus is demanding Bill Barr reveal the full extent to which the US department of Justice was working with Sergio Moro and the Lava Jato task force. What does all this have to do with the fires? I'll give you two guesses what happened to Brazillian protections for the Amazon against big agribusiness under Bolsonaro's right-wing regime. The Amazon rain forest produces 20% of the Earth's oxygen. This is not a problem we can avoid by cowering behind a fucking wall.
