Your assumption is correct, that is what this box is for: taking MIDI notes and turning them into sounds that you shape via the knobs. It seems like you're almost there, something simple is going on. POSSIBILITY #1: The MIDI channel your keyboard is sending is not the one the synth is listening on. Testing for this is simple enough: apparently there are DIP switches on the back of the Model D that let you select the MIDI channel. Try setting that to each possible channel (1 to 16) and testing to see whether it starts working when you play your keyboard. I am 99% confident that this is the problem (your keyboard is sending on Channel 1 to a synth that's listening on Channel 2).
Thank you very much. I fiddled with the dip switches in a rando manner and then got the manual out and went through them one at a time. My keyboard was on channel 4. The best part was hitting keys on the keyboard, not hearing anything and then suddenly an ear drum-rupturing tone of sweet, sweet synths. This is the greatest thing ever, and I have you to thank. Thank you!
Did you get to a place where you can record MIDI notes from your keyboard in a DAW (e.g. Ableton)? If so, that's going to be the most convenient way to control the routing of MIDI channels to and from devices. I would go "keyboard -> DAW -> Model D" because 1: it will let you record and playback 2: it will let you create arbitrary sequences via drawing notes in the DAW and 3: you are going to lose your fucking mind once you get this thing working and use Live's Arpeggiator in tandem with twiddling knobs on this thing.
Hahah - yes! I did get to where I can record from the keyboard. In two days my free trial of Ableton runs out. I'm going to run through some of the other programs you directed me to when that happens. I'm happy to pay for Ableton, I just want to contrast it against some others, but yeah, I did get to that one point. And your point about the keyboard to the DAW to the synth is good because I would have never thought of that way on my own, but that makes sense. I don't know what an Arpeggiator is - this is exciting, I am looking forward to all of this! Thank you once again, my friend.
