Forum Overview :: Gamerasutra :: Persona 5
Continues the series' trend of one step forward, one step back with every sequel Persona 3- Decent creepy story, up until about the halfway point where awful villains are introduced. 2 well written characters, 1 great character, and a bunch of forgettables. Persona 4- Improves on gameplay in every way. Amazing Silent Hill early opening. Plot is awful after that, creepy atmosphere dropped, all annoying characters. Persona 5- Amazing visual presentation where there are almost no static screens and everything is vibrant and full of motion, comes off like a Lupin the 3rd intro with Suspiria color scheme. Verdict still out on gameplay but it looks to be an improvement. They completely drop any horror angle, which might be fine if it was still well written but OH MY GOD this has by far the slowest and lamest early game of the bunch. People turning into zombies or transforming into bloody coffins at midnight or supernatural serial killer leaving bodies strung up on power lines? Nope! The setup is...gathering evidence to fire an asshole high school volleyball coach...yeah. Maybe it changes later on but I'm five HOURS in and it's still stuck there. I guess they realized how boring the opening was so they do what all hacks do in this case: the flash forward opening. Worse, they go with the hackiest of hack flash forwards where it's an interrogation just like when Dragon Age 2 (Inquisition?) tried to be just like The Usual Suspects. When was the last time this device actually served a purpose in a story other than covering up a boring first act?
