I think comedians are different than musicians on this
Professional musicians are universally maladjusted weirdos. Just look at the number of musicians that we revere as heroes that were so fucked up as people that they died of drug overdoses in their 20s. Our understanding of how musicians work is that they're shitshow savants who destroy themselves and the people around them to make the comforting pretty stuff we like. As a culture we accept that behavior. Comedians, on the other hand, are supposed to be more honest versions of ourselves. They say stuff and we laugh because we identify with what they say. The people laughing around us are part of our tribe because they also identify with it. "LOL we are all ok." But then you find out that they're not a more honest version of you, they're a criminal; you want out of their tribe. Can you go back and watch Bill Cosby make a joke about how his kids won't let him take a nap? THAT GUY DRUGGED AND RAPED DOZENS OF WOMEN. The joke about how he thought his brother's name was Damn It and he thought his name was Jesus Christ? Not funny now. I mourn those jokes because they made me feel good, but I can't laugh at them now. If you laugh with someone it's because you relate to them and I just don't relate to rapists. It's not even like, a principled stance I'm taking, I literally just don't find them funny now because of how laughter works. What Louis CK did isn't on a level with what Bill Cosby did but it still takes him out of the group of people I want to be like. So I don't find him funny anymore either. :(
