In defense of the squids
Starhammer II was made as an asymmetric singleplayer game and that allowed the squids to work more as game elements than functional battleships. By which I mean half the squid ships had weapons that were about making the battlefield more of an obstacle course to puzzle your ships through in order to make those perfect T-crossing formations to concentrate fire. My one biggest complaint about the game is the ships had no inertia, you could go from a crawl to max speed in a single turn, whereas critical mass had limits to your acceleration and deceleration that could be used by the player to better time their shots by guessing the correct location the enemy would be at next round. BSG seems to have the same engine but different machanics, like a strong emphasis on punching through directional armor facing. But don't expect a BSG review from me anytime soon, I'm waiting for a sale.
