I was a bit surprised to learn this one would have a South Asian crewman.
I always assumed the reason we never saw any East Indians on Star Trek (despite seeing plenty of regular Indians, like the ones on that Garden of Eden planet who worshipped an amnesiac Kirk as a god, or those stubborn colonists Picard was ordered to forcibly relocate, or Chakotay and his fucking vision quests) was because they all turned themselves white in the Eugenics Wars of the 1990s, hence Khan Noonien Singh's portrayal by a Spanish actor. Was this ever expanded universe canon, or just my brain filling in the gaps? BTW I checked, the actors who played Bashir and his parents were all of Middle Eastern extraction (despite Jerry Seinfeld getting his dad deported to Pakistan that one time), and the surname Bashir is of Arabic origin (it means "brown-ish").
