If you don't see something take off with practical applications within 5 years
It's probably never going to happen. You saw the Nintendo DS within 5 years of most people at least hearing about PDAs. You saw tablets within 5 years of the DS. VR has had novelty pushes for, what, 26 years now? I have a futurist friend who can't stop going on about how this generation's VR is the next big evolution. Points include: -It might seem like science fiction now, but Star Trek predicted cel phones(?) -We're eventually going to get the matrix and "technology has to start somewhere" -Okay, the early 90s VR sucked, but this time it's totally going to happen! -This totally isn't like motion control! Motion control was only moving the controller. VR can cover everything! Despite advances from the early 90s, VR isn't going to take off for the same reason motion control and the Wii Fit board never took off: nobody wants to move around waving their arms constantly while playing a video game (unless your name is DDR). This is going to remain true no matter how cheap and lightweight the hardware gets.
