Jagged Alliance II

Understanding your Steam JA2 options.
It can be overwhelming if you're attempting to get into a Jagged Alliance game in 2017. RetroRomper, that crazy little face-creamed creamface, started talking crazy about Jagged Alliance 2 to me recently. I realize that I loved the game, had fond memories of it, but never finished it. I have never seen so much as an ant in sci-fi mode, either. I had been collecting JA2 games as fast as developers have been making them. I'd like to share my experiences so you can get started if you feel so inclined. Jagged Alliance This is for historical purposes only. It came to market 9 months after X-COM did, and X-COM captured everyone's imagination. However, a case can be made that the sequel to X-COM is inferior to JA2. Jagged Alliance 2 - does not exist on Steam, technically, as you can see above. There is something with this name on gog. Jagged Alliance 2: Gold Pack. This is what I actually have, though if I go to "Gold Pack" I'm told I own it. This is the version I am going forward with, over Wildfire. On Steam the resolution isn't great, but it is playable. On the other hand, I keep monitors longer than most. The version Steam tells me I've got is 1.12, which is exactly where you want to be for JA2 initially. (See below for a comment on 1.13.) Jagged Alliance 2: Unfinished Business. This takes place in a different setting than JA2. It is supposed to take place "after" JA2. So really, this should be played after some version of JA2. I haven't tried it. Jagged Alliance 2: Wildfire. This has different mercs than standard JA2. The difficulty is said to be ramped up and from a quick playthrough of the first fight on novice versus the first fight on JA2: Gold, I can say that is accurate. So this is the same setting as JA2 Gold, but harder and with different content. Just from trying it out I can tell you that the merc Grizzly is given an Uzi instead of a revolver for his starting weapon. I want that Uzi back, but I understand that maybe the Wildfire game is handing out Uzis so well because it has to. Jagged Alliance 2: Flashback. This game was created by a developer called "Full Control" It has mixed reviews on Steam. The kids are crying that it isn't finished, that it's been abandoned in Early Access and that the developer ran out of money. I remember this being a disaster from what I heard, the problem is that with games like JA2, fucking guys play for 100 hours and give it a negative review. By and large, Steam reviews are useless for this franchise. Jagged Alliance Online: Reloaded. Never heard of it before tonight. Some gamers speak of Jagged Alliance 2, the 1.13 patch. It supports higher resolutions, increased team sizes and more mercs. I don't know if I want that experience, though, as I think Sir-Tech crafted this game and I am more interested in the direction they had than fans and modders. It is not a patch, however. It is a mod. Lastly! READ THE MANUAL FOR JA2. There's stuff you need to do to advance the plot of the game, and the game does not go out of its way to tell you this. Stuff like talking to a little kid. There is also a book on Amazon in a series where people dive deep into their favorite games. Get that, too. It's here. The manual is available in PDF form on the Internet. the dark and gritty...Ice Cream Jonsey!
