Side-track: A poll for Caltrops - Player's Guides
How does everyone feel about a game that (for all practical purposes) needs a guide / word of mouth / etc. in order to successfully finish it or understand important features? The law-abiding, rule-following side of me thinks that makes it Bad and should disqualify it from being the best at anything (except SUCKING OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!!! [sickburn.gif]), on the other hand the Fonzie side of me thinks that's bullshit because it disqualifies games like The Legend of Zelda (I refuse to believe the average person figured out how to navigate The Lost Woods on their own) or every fighting game in the 90s. There are a number of games I can think of that I have genuine affection for and think they're super fun and would recommend them, but with an asterisk that certain things need to be looked up beforehand. On the other hand, I have been critical of games that are too confusing and don't explain themselves very well. So where does Caltrops come down on this issue? If guides are acceptable, where is the / is there a line?
