US spooks build robo-bomber to kill pakis based on PRISM metadata, name it SKYNE
I was thinking of also putting this in Balance of Power because it's an outcome of current US foreign policy but fuck it. Here: <a href url="http://arstechnica.co.uk/security/2016/02/the-nsas-skynet-program-may-be-killing-thousands-of-innocent-people/">"Ridiculously optimistic" machine learning algorithm is "completely bullshit," says expert.</a> Welcome to the era of immoral technocracy, cyberpunk fans! Someone call William Gibson, he should be writing a whole new trilogy about this. Hell, someone call whoever owns Shadowrun and tell them there's a robo-bomber squadron controlled by a computer named after a James Cameron movie villain semi-randomly selecting pakistanis to kill based on their cellphone metadata. I can't even keep a straight face writing this. The decision tree for this was trained on a dataset of 7 positives and 100,000 randomly selected negatives. Some guys I know work in machine learning. Their comments were that they couldn't conceive of a way to get such a system to produce good results. The NSA gives everyone in a target demographic a terror level based on what you say in a phone call or the phone record or some bullshit and are training a drone bomber strike squadron to murder brown people in a desert based on some bullshit calculation with seven identifiers of you being likely to go suicide bomber and a hundred thousand identifiers of you being likely to be a regular person who wouldn't hurt a fly. Hope I don't get seven spam emails on my phone from ISIS this month. I feel like I'm in the presence of a huge, lumbering bulk of constructed structure trying to keep from falling somehow, or partially obscured? Hmm. Where have I seen this before? HMM. <img src=http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uc4NXC-5pLA/SzEOdgQGdwI/AAAAAAAACKE/iSsgwjDudhs/s400/planetapes.jpg> Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains.
