The great horror of Grantland didn't stop just because they shut the site down. Over at 538 they have trash like this: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-best-movies-that-are-kind-of-about-christmas/ Oh yeah, perfect for 538! The site that predicts the election. Now putting forth this sort of self-satisfied garbage:
You find yourself at a party where everyone is talking about favorite Christmas movies. Sure, you could say “Elf,” which you know in the deep ventricles of your cold and bitter heart is an uplifting film that inspires you annually. But instead, you go for the classic: “Oh, my favorite Christmas movie is ‘Die Hard.’” What a clever thing you just did! You have cemented your credibility not only as a person who understands the subtext of action movies, but also an unconventional viewer who has surveyed the holiday canon and concluded that, nah, Bruce Willis saving Christmas is more your deal. At this point in the party you will light a cigarette and ride away from the conversation on your motorcycle.
Here are a few sins this guy manages to indulge in over the first two paragraphs. 1) Dumb premise. Nobody talks about their "favorite" Christmas movies in real life. 2) He's creating a kind of straw man by thinking he said something clever and then bashing it. 3) He does the SAME FUCKING THING when he suggests Elf because Peter Dinklage got extremely famous. 4) The cigarette and motorcycle imagery is poor. This is a shitty Grantland article that ESPN paid for and someone decided, "Fuck it" and put it on the closest thing they have for that. Sure, there's all sorts of advanced statistics awkwardly crammed into that bile, but you could have put it on the front page of Grantland at any point over the last three years and it would have fit perfectly. (It's okay to like things.) I still wish I could point to sites and say, "Here's an example of writing that doesn't do this" but I've decided that I've given up since our earlier exchange. I hope you enjoy this place, we do sometimes like things. Have a great Christmas, friend. the dark and gritty...Ice Cream Jonsey!
