Sublevel Zero first impressions
This is an action roguelike patterned after Descent's singleplayer experience. 6 degrees of movement freedom in a twisty-turny abandoned asteroid base full of angry low-poly security droids. The game was heavily influenced by Ziggurat, which is a good thing. That's probably one of the most skill-oriented of all the action roguelikes I've ever played. The controls are very tight and the framerate is silky smooth. I love the aesthetic. Generally I don't go for intentionally "retro," but I love the combination of bloom and big fat pixels. However, big fat pixels can have their downside. It took me a couple tries before I realized what I took for steaming heat grates were actually treasure chests. Even worse, I died one run with my face in something I thought was a collectible only for it to turn out to be a hostile robot's backside. I'm a little let down that destroying a level's core is not followed by a frantic escape sequence. Still a little rough around the edges, the text in the level up screen spills out of the windows. Overall I'm happy with the product.
