Re: Settlers counter rebuttal
this first:
Sounds like a more drawn out, less fun version of Guerilla.
It's my understanding that these games aren't that similar, but I've never played Guerilla. What I've often read that it hasn't aged that well, but people say the same about Junta, so maybe they are quite similar.
Brick is USUALLY the stopgap, you fags, because it's required for the most vital components: roads and towns.
Expect in many games when I build 2 roads a 2 settlements for a total of 4 brick... compared to say a city that requires 3 ore alone. I often don't play on brick unless there are two brick spots next to each other, at which point I go for that and a port as the brick will come in eventually. It is very hard to win building endless settlements and roads if more than one player attempts it. This tends to drag the game out for no reason other than poor play.
YES there are other ways to score points, but a lack of resources is a lack of resources, and once an opponent's road cuts yours off and isolates you then you're screwed. Ports? A tool for the already rich players that just happen to be short of one resource and can afford to trade in at a 3:1 exchange rate. There's no way someone who's behind is going to catch up like that.
Seeing as I've done it, I can only conclude that you suck at an entire new class of games.
