My laptop's USB ports have recently stopped working periodically. When it happens, they're completely dead on boot up. No mouse, no charger, nothing. The only thing I notice amiss was in device manager where, under the list of USB controllers, "Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Host controller" had the dreaded yellow triangle exclamation icon. I tried uninstalling it and scanning for new hardware. It just came back with the error icon. I tried disabling USB selective suspend under power settings. I tried updating the controller driver. The one thing that eventually worked was uninstalling the host controller, shutting down, unplugging the AC adaptor, then booting up from the battery. Things would work normally until the problem randomly cropped up on a future boot up. The solution also works randomly. Up until now where it's just refusing to work. Is it just the hardware dying? Laptop is about 3 years old.
It just seems to randomly reinstall successfully with each uninstall (Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Host controller)+bootup, usually taking around a dozen before it sticks. The most promising solution I've seen is updating my motherboard's firmware, but since I'm an idiot I'm not finding anything on the manufacturer website (Sony VAIO, model VPCF236fm, Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2670QM, BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. R2150V3). The other solution has been this, but again because I am an idiot I have no clue what an "INF only" or "no monitor switch" is and a google search didn't enlighten me.
