I remember why I hated Speaker of the Dead so much
Besides being dull and dreadful on its own. It's that I think it reminded me of when I had read A Wind in the Door of that godawful Wrinkle in Time series. Good god I hated those books. They read like a horrendous merging of Card's special genius kids and C.S. Lewis' naked Christian worship. I was 9 when I read it and I remember thinking even then what unlikeable pretentious twats Meg and Charles were. Stupid mundanes persecuting scientists and child geniuses is wrong, but ultimately it's submitting to Jesus that saves the day. The next book Many Waters was even worse. Hundreds of pages describing how bad the body odor of biblical nomads was, how evil women who have sex are, and how saving yourself until marriage saves the day. Just reading the Wikipedia plot summary to those books reminds me how much I despised them.
