One of the promises of the "internet of everything" was that software updates would help keep older models from becoming dated. Even if it's true, nobody's shown an interest in keeping dated hardware. They'd rather chuck it and buy the latest model of whatever gadget. There have been tons of news stories of how stores throw out functional goods because the latest upgrade is out and who wants to be behind the curve? I wonder if the obsession with VR is like the film industry's obsession with 3D with the same result - the public never reaches the enthusiasm that they hoped for.[/quote]
