RPS says it the teleporting that kills the tension
and I partially agree, but then Demon Souls didn't have that problem even with its hub world. They basically took all the small, potentially lethal dangers of Demon Souls and DS1 and smashed them into single hotzones for DS2. It's the same as every mainstream shooter where you recover full health between encounters so the designers can always assume you're at 100% for each fight (hence the lifestones). There's not as much tension because you always have a pretty sizable breather between encounters and it's never that hard to recover your souls. The only place in DS1 where I really felt like there was space between enemies was the very beginning of Anor Londo at the very first bonfire. I enjoyed it. I'll try to get through NG+ since it sounds like they add a lot more shit than just +% damage and life to enemies. The tension of DS1 is gone, but so is the a lot of the tedium from backtracking and shit, so take your pick I guess.
