Well, it looks like 2 more video game Kickstarters bit the dust. Unwritten has the grace to offer refunds even though it seems like part of the funds may have been used to pay medical bills. McGee's Little Red Riding Hood rip-off is now 1.7 mill in the hole and has gone onto the second stage of scamming, Steam Early Access. Some choice quotes:
"The idea that $200,000 would finish everything was arrived at under the assumption that Akaneiro would sustain itself. It didn't have to be a runaway success but it needed to cover costs," Kelly Heckman of Spicy Horse explained. "Unfortunately, what we found upon release was some architectural problems (this is why co-op is behind); issues upgrading our GUI - the one we used was compatible with Unity 4.0 but not Unity 4.5, which required redoing the entire GUI; and feedback that told us the game simply wasn't fun. All of this needed to be addressed before we could implement co-op or tablet."
From Kickstarter:
Because the project is an an advanced development state, the bulk of the risk has been overcome already. Bringing a faithful version to tablets will present some challenges, but with support from technology partners like Nvidia, we expect to clear those without too much pain. The remaining effort will be focused on content development and delivery of well-understood features. That being the case, we feel the overall risks are quite low.
Tom vs Bruce is up to 5 articles to show for their monthly schedule since 2012. No T-shirts look like they've been delivered and that "founder's wall" still hasn't materialized. No videotaped match or games with Wolpaw, Desslock, or Wand. Somebody actually analyzed Kickstarter outcomes and so far only a third have delivered fully and the odds of getting what you paid for after a project gets 6 figures drops like a stone. I get that Kickstarter has a place in funding artistic projects. But I hope Steam Early Access kills the video game section of Kickstarter. I don't know that Broken Age or Banner Saga have justified the mediocrity and disappointment that's come out of it.
