My parents have been watching this regularly so I checked it out now that it's on Netflix. It's the exact same stuff you saw only a few years ago in Jericho, which was just a bloated The Postman. The twist is the JJ Abrams hook of a mysterious setup with mysterious objects and promised answers to string people along through the tedium. I'll say it again that Abrams is a reverse M. Night Shyamalan, putting the twist up front. Where M Night fucked up though was sticking to movies. Abrams figured out that if you front load a TV show, people will feel invested and stick with it no matter how bad it gets. I'm with Patrice O'Neal on Kevin Costner post apocalyptic movies. How did Waterworld get universally panned but Abrams' Star Trek endlessly praised by critics? Does more movies looking like videogames mean the critics have to take on the same AAA whorishness?
