Elder Scrolls and Deus Ex were always fps, Fallout 3 basically a mod of Oblivion
Game companies think they can reboot franchises like movies, but it turns out people are as much fans of gameplay as they are of setting. Fallout 2 and Fallout 3 are both 'games' and both in the same setting but they are not similar the way the Sam Raimi film Spiderman and the newer Amazing Spiderman are. Those are still both the same kind of thing so fans carry over, but FO2 and FO3 are basically 2 different media so fans don't carry over. I know "media" isn't the perfect word there but I think "genre" is the wrong word to separate the two. Modern usage of "genre" implies similarity in narrative and often setting and so they are "the same narrative genre" but they are not the same "type or kind" of game. In most key ways FO2 and FO3 are more different from each other than FO3 and Spiderman, so the scale of the difference seems to call for "media." Now that I think about it old greek rhetorical terms might fit better here altogether.
