Re: The NSA. Crime. A Serious Caltrops Thread

I submit that the ONLY problem is the sheer amount of data. Throw out all morality (I personally believe that everyone who knew about it or worked on it should see prison time.) -- does there exist the possibility of "knowing what happened" in situations where there was otherwise no chance?
The lesser but still significant problem here is that you and I commit crimes on a continuous basis often without even knowing about it. This can and has been used against people when the state couldn't find evidence of a real crime. The greater problem here is that the United States Government has never collected a piece of information that then did not end up in the hands of any interested corporation or billionaire. Literally every detail of your life is of interest to your medical insurer, who as of now can still deny you coverage without detailing any reason. Since I'm an overpaid contractor I have to get my own insurance and I'm not thrilled that if I'd had a drug arrest or something 10 years ago my premiums could double or I could just be told no by an insurer. I don't believe anything will be done about it, or that anything people do through legal means will change anything about what's happening, and unlike my fuckwit parents I don't really expect anyone to do anything outside the law about it either. A little bit of disclosure: I worked in that department at a telecom a few years ago, so I know what is collected from cellphone traffic, how, when, what the limits of the tech are, etc.
